Gladiator Training Holidays - Mojacar, Andalucia, Spain.

Although gladiator training might not be the most common activity to be practised in the UK, the AAFA believes it is one of the most complete forms of exercise invented. Imagine those boxing/boxercise classes you’ve done; now add the weight of a sword in one hand and a shield in the other and you’re getting close.

That’s not to say it isn’t suited to all abilities. Like most sports, you can work to your own level, although our instructors will be pushing that level to its peak. For a week you will be put through your paces with techniques that combine swordsmanship with modern

boxing and martial arts. Many of the theories about the way gladiators fought are put into practice, informed by knowledge gleaned from Roman illustrations and contemporary accounts.
The morning training sessions will adhere to the rituals and dress codes of 2,000 years ago, as participants are provided with the training gear of a Roman gladiator. When you are pitted against an opponent, however, you will wear full protective gear, including padded helmet and gloves. Surprisingly, this isn’t too far removed from the ethos of the time, when gladiators were deemed far too expensive to risk serious injury in training. Fortunately, it also ensures that the only things aching at the end of the day will be your muscles!
Sparring on the beach
As with our karate holidays , the week isn’t all about the training and, after the session, you’ll be free to relax on one of the many Mojacar beaches, or by the hotel pool. Alternatively, while transport is provided between the airport, hotel and training beach, why not hire your own car and explore the region. Andalucía is an area famed for its stunning scenery and traditional
markets and tapas bars. You’ll also have two days off from training during your stay, when you’ll have a chance to venture further afield to historic places like The Alhambra at Granada, the Parque Natural Cabo de Gata, the potteries at Nijar, or The Fort of the Sun at Lorca; or if you prefer something more light-hearted, there are at least four Western theme parks just over an hour’s drive away. Included in your stay is one night when you will be invited to a Roman feast and presented with a wooden sword (“Rudis”), the symbol of freedom, as a memento of your Gladiator holiday.
